Posted August 29, 2014 12:00 PM

All of us in Mississauga know we have to get the oil changed in our vehicles periodically. That's just part of good vehicle care. But when Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. technicians change your oil, they also usually inspect your air filter. That's why they sometimes let you know that your air filter needs to be changed before releasing your vehicle.

Don't just chock this up to trying to sell you something else. Mississauga area drivers really do need to change their air filter when it gets dirty. You can check your owner's manual to see how often your air filter should need to be changed, but remember, if you live in an area in Ontario with poor air quality, or if you drive a lot or drive under harsh conditions in the Mississauga area, you may need to change that filter more often than is recommended.

Changing an air filter isn't guesswork. If a filter's dirty, it needs to be replaced. Air filters aren't very expensive at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd.. But the problems they cause if Mississauga auto owners don't change them can get to be.

I Can See Clearly Now: Wiper Blade Replacement in Mississauga

Posted August 20, 2014 12:00 PM

About 90% of our driving decisions in the Mississauga area are based solely on what we see. So having a good pair of windshield wipers is extremely important.

Most Mississauga drivers have experienced the frustration and fear of not being able to see clearly during a storm, or when our vehicle windshield is just dirty. In fact, it's estimated that 46,000,000 drivers across the nation are driving with wipers that can't adequately clear their windshield in a storm.

It seems like our wiper blades are always at their worst when we need them the most. If that sounds like you, you've got plenty of company in the Mississauga area. 78% of drivers only change their wiper blades after the blades function so poorly that they become a safety hazard.

Mississauga drivers need to change their thinking. Instead of blades being something to replace when they fail, we need to consider wiper blades as vehicle safety component. Then we'll stay ahead of the storm.

Mississauga vehicle owners really ought to replace wiper blades twice a year; in the spring and the fall. If you live in the colder parts of Ontario, you may even want to get special winter blades in the fall.

Winter blades are made to resist freezing. Speaking of winter and freezing Mississauga conditions, if your vehicle has been sitting for a long time and the windshield becomes frozen, don't use your wipers to clear off snow and ice. That can shred your blades and may even damage the wiper motor.

Your wiper blades live outside in the freezing cold and blistering sun. Over time, they become hard and brittle, and then tear. They also lose their flexibility and just don't clear the vehicle windshield effectively. Worn wiper blades aren't just a safety hazard for Mississauga drivers; they can also scratch their windshield. That may require replacing the entire vehicle windshield – that's the consequence for neglecting such a small part.

Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. recommends Mississauga drivers replace worn blades right away. We can provide you with a quality replacement blade. At Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd., they cost about the same as they would at the store – but installation is included.

Of course you also need washer fluid to help your blades do their work. Even though Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. will top off the washer fluid with a full service oil change, it is a good idea to have some extra fluid at home. Take it with you if you're heading out on a road trip.

Always use windshield washer fluid. Plain water, even that fancy French bottled water, just doesn't cut it. It can freeze in the fluid reservoir or on the windshield itself, making things worse. Besides, water won't clean your windows as well.

So follow these tips to keep your windshield clear and your eyes on the road.

Shake It up in Mississauga!: Why Wheel Balancing

Posted August 15, 2014 12:00 PM

Our vehicles are not massage chairs. While we may enjoy a good vibration in an overstuffed recliner, we generally want as smooth a ride as possible in our vehicles. One way to achieve this is to keep a vehicle's wheels in balance.

When a tire is mounted onto a wheel, it is usually out of balance. This means that as the wheel spins, there is a slight wobble to the path of the tire. For best handling performance and safety on the road, Mississauga drivers want to minimize this wobble as much as possible. So we balance our tires. To balance a tire, your technician at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. spins it on a machine or drum to determine where it is off-balance. He then attaches weights that counter-balance the uneven weight. Most people in Mississauga are surprised at how much balancing improves the smoothness of their ride.

High-quality tires generally hold their balance well. But over time, wear and tear take their toll and tires can become unbalanced. Mississauga drivers can tell when a front tire is unbalanced if they feel a vibration in the steering wheel. If a back tire is unbalanced, you'll feel a vibration in your seat. You may not notice these vibrations until they get fairly serious — or until someone else drives your vehicle — because they usually develop slowly. If a vibration starts abruptly, it usually means you've lost a balancing weight.

The average tire rotates at about 850 revolutions per minute at 60 mph/97 kmh. When a tire is out of balance, it actually hops down the road, rather than rolling. So at 60 mph/97 kph, it is slamming into the pavement 14 times a second. That's what creates the vibration. When tires are out of balance, they wear out more quickly. The lack of balance also causes extra wear on shocks, struts, steering components and suspension parts.

Getting a balance job at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. in Mississauga can prevent repair bills and even an accident. It will improve the safety of your vehicle as well as its handling performance. When you change your rims or get a flat repaired at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd., you'll need to get your tires balanced as well. When you rotate your tires, you may want to have them balanced, too.

Some Mississauga vehicle owners, however, only balance their wheels every other rotation. You can check your owner's manual to see what is recommended for your vehicle. Balancing your tires is part of preventive maintenance. It keeps your vehicle in good repair and prevents damage to many of its components. So practice good vehicle care and make it a point to keep your tires balanced. It's quality auto advice from Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd.. Massage chairs may vibrate away our worries, but unbalanced tires will just rattle Mississauga drivers' nerves.

A New Battery in Mississauga

Posted August 5, 2014 12:00 PM

Hello Mississauga drivers, let's talk about batteries. Car batteries are just like any rechargeable battery. They will eventually wear out and die. If you are shopping for a new battery in Mississauga, here's some auto advice to help you.

There are two measurements to consider when purchasing a new battery: cold cranking amps and reserve capacity. The power required to start a cold engine is measured in cold cranking amps. The number you need is determined by what kind of vehicle you drive and where you live. In general, higher-cylinder engines require more cold cranking amps than lower-cylinder engines. In other words, an eight-cylinder engine needs more cold cranking amps than a six-cylinder one. Also, diesel engines require more cold cranking amps than gasoline engines.

The weather where you live in Ontario also determines the number of cold cranking amps you need. The colder the vehicle engine, the more power it takes to get it started. Also, cold Ontario weather reduces the electrical efficiency of the battery, which reduces the amount of energy available in the battery to start the engine. Thus, in freezing temperatures, you need more power to start an engine, but you have less power available to get it started.

Your friendly and knowledgeable service advisor at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. in Mississauga can help you choose an appropriate battery for your vehicle and your lifestyle. If you need extra power owing to cold weather or a need for more reserve capacity, you may want to choose a heavy-duty battery. Just make sure it fits into your vehicle. An oversized battery may give you the power you need, but it's a serious safety hazard if the terminals come into contact with other parts of the vehicle.

Keep in mind that preventive maintenance performed at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. and good vehicle care can extend the life of your battery. Judicious use of electric gadgets and good driving habits are wise and can help you get the most out of your battery.
