Have You Checked Your Headlights?

Posted June 25, 2014 12:00 PM

Like everything in the Ontario automotive market, there have been great strides in headlight technology in recent years. Ontario drivers can be safer at night because of it. Good headlights improve visibility on Mississauga roads, enabling you to see farther. They also improve your peripheral vision, helping you to see the sides more clearly. The more you can see, the more quickly you can react to road conditions. This is because nearly half of traffic fatalities take place at night. And as Mississauga resident population ages, everything that helps older eyes is welcome.

Most new vehicles sold in Ontario come with halogen headlamps. A decade ago, halogens were exotic and expensive. Now that they are standard equipment, the price has come way down. Many luxury cars are equipped with high intensity discharge, or HID, headlamps. You have probably seen them on some Mississauga roads; they're very bright and have a bluish tint.

From behind the wheel, there is no doubt that HID headlamps are the best thing going. However, many Mississauga drivers complain about HID lights in oncoming traffic or when they approach from behind. In fact, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called for public comment, they received a record number of complaints about HIDs. This has lead to several studies - your tax dollars at work. Some expect future regulation of HID lamps.

All halogen headlamps dim over time. Your service advisor at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. recommends that they be changed out once a year. We suggest you replace your headlamps in the fall at the end of Daylight Saving Time. It's easy to remember; when you change your clock, change your headlamps. Remember to replace all headlamps at the same time; then all your lights will be equally bright. You will appreciate it during those long Ontario winter nights.

If you have an older vehicle with old-school headlamps, you might be able to get a halogen replacement. You'll be amazed at the difference this upgrade will make.

In addition to regular halogen lamps, Mississauga vehicles can upgrade to premium lamps that filter some of the yellow light, making a bright white light that's more like natural sunlight. This light's easier on the eyes and should improve reaction time.

Now, you may be able to step up to HID headlamps, depending on the kind of car you drive. These lamps should last the life of your car, but cost several hundred dollars a pair. If you want other Mississauga vehicles to think you're running HID lamps, you can even buy regular halogens that have a bluish tint. Does she or doesn't she? Only her Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. technician knows for sure.

Over time, plastic headlight covers can get cloudy or yellowed. In fact, AAA reports that nine out of ten headlights are dirty or yellowed, greatly reducing vision. In addition to helping you replace your headlamps, many service centers such as Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. in Mississauga, Ontario, can restore headlight covers. Headlights can be restored at a fraction of the cost of replacing them.

Clean Air for Your Engine: Engine Air Filters In Mississauga

Posted June 18, 2014 12:00 PM

Every Mississauga car owner who has taken their car in for an oil change has been told that their engine air filter's dirty.

Here's what goes into the determination of when to change the filter: First, your vehicle owner's manual will have a recommendation of when the filter should be replaced.

So between your owner's manual and your Mississauga technician's inspection there's really no guesswork involved for Mississauga drivers.

Now, most air filters purchased in Mississauga don't cost a lot to replace. It's just that Ontario people hate getting caught with an unexpected expense. On the plus side, though, changing a dirty air filter at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. can often save enough on gas to pay for itself before your next oil change in Mississauga.

Think about a dirty furnace filter in your Mississauga home. When it's all clogged up, enough clean air can't get through. In your vehicle, that means that your engine can't get as much air as it needs to burn the fuel efficiently. So it makes do with less air and has to use more gas to move your vehicle around Mississauga roads.

Your vehicle actually needs about 12,000 times more air than fuel to run. Engine air filters don't cost much in Mississauga at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd.. When it's time to change yours, just get it done. You'll get better fuel economy, have better performance and protect your vehicle engine.

Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd.: Good Service and Good Fuel Economy

Posted June 12, 2014 12:00 PM

Most Mississauga auto owners want to save on gas and seek our advice on improving economy. At Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd., we are frequently asked, however, if it is really worth the extra effort. Just how much money can Mississauga drivers actually save?

In today's Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. article, we're focusing on the things you can do to improve your vehicle’s economy driving around Ontario. We'll tell you the potential savings per gallon of gas at $3.50, and we'll show a chart that also shows the savings at $3.00 and $4.00.

The next item is replacing a clogged engine air filter. Your engine needs enough air to burn fuel efficiently for the best mileage. A clean air filter means you get plenty of air. The fact that the air's clean protects your engine. That can save you up to 10 percent or 35 cents a gallon.

Fixing a faulty oxygen sensor can improve economy by up to 40 percent. That's a whopping $1.40 in savings per gallon. Bring your car to Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. in Mississauga and we'll check your oxygen sensor.

Chances are that if your oxygen sensor is kaput your Check Engine light will come on. Now, there are any number of things that could cause your Check Engine light to come on besides oxygen sensor problems. But if it's on, get it checked out as soon as you can at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd..

Here's an easy one for Mississauga auto owners. Inflate your tires to the recommended pressure. That could save you three percent or 11 cents a gallon. Even a little drop in pressure will bring down your economy, so check your tires every week.

Your vehicle has recommended a specific weight of motor oil. The recommendation is based on engine design and will give you the best protection. Using a heavier weight could cost one to two percent in reduced economy, or up to seven cents a gallon.

Another thing Mississauga vehicle owners can do to improve that costs nothing is to toss the junk out of our trunks. In other words, clean out the car and stop hauling around non-essentials. Don't treat your vehicle like a storage locker. Dumping 100 pounds of extra weight adds up to a 2% savings at the pump.

So when you tell someone you were going somewhere anyway and they're welcome to come along, that's okay. But if someone tells you they need to come along and it's no harm to you since you were going anyway—well, now you can tell them, “Sorry, dude, but you're an extra fifteen cents a gallon!”

All joking aside, let's all do ourselves a favor and fatten up our wallets by practicing good car care and better driving habits in Ontario.

The Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. Guide to Vehicle Diagnosis

Posted June 5, 2014 12:00 PM

Modern Mississauga vehicles have several computers on board that control all kinds of things like engine functions, transmission shifts, traction control, anti-lock brakes, stability control, emissions – and on some vehicles, even steering, braking and the throttle.

Think about that for a minute – things that used to be controlled by simple mechanical connections now have electronic controls that rely on computers, software and sensors. It's no wonder that when something goes wrong with their vehicle it can be pretty complicated for Mississauga drivers to track down the source of the problem.

To help your service advisor at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. figure out what's wrong, your vehicle is equipped with on-board diagnostics. The Check Engine light comes on to tell you there's a problem and the engine management computer stores a trouble code. Your friendly and knowledgeable Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. technician connects a scan tool to your vehicle's diagnostic port and retrieves the trouble codes as well as other important data.

Trouble codes are like clues for the technician to follow as he diagnoses what's wrong with your vehicle. In a way, it's like going to your Mississauga doctor with a problem. She'll run some additional tests and gather the information she needs to make a diagnosis and form a treatment plan. How much a vehicle diagnosis costs at Meadowvale Auto Repair Specialists Ltd. in Mississauga depends on how much time it takes to sort out the symptoms and find the underlying problem.
